Joshua Slater Guest Conductor

Joshua Anand Slater, Guest Conductor for our April 2019 concert, is a freelance musician based in New York.  He can be found conducting, playing organ and piano, or singing with ensembles including The Choir of Trinity Wall Street and The Choir of the Church of St. Ignatius of Antioch, where he is Artist-in-Residence. He consults for churches on a variety of organ and outreach projects, and for arts organisations on marketing and operations.

Most recently, he was Assistant Director of Music at Trinity Church Wall Street, where he was active as a performer, administrator, programming specialist and writer.  He was principally responsible for liturgical music and as assistant to Julian Wachner in Trinity’s “indispensable and unmissable” (The New York Times) concert series.  He acted as assistant producer and worked in postproduction in Trinity’s recordings including Du Yun’s Pulitzer-winning Angel’s Bone.

An active scholar and writer, Mr. Slater served as Trinity’s principal program annotator, and has been commissioned by the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Washington Chorus as well as several recitalists and smaller organisations. Samples of his work are available at pnfte.wordpress.com.

Before coming to New York, he conducted the choirs and various instrumental ensembles of Christ Church Cathedral, Hartford, CT, where he established an active music program including an historically-performed annual Bach festival, several artist residencies, and a guest artist concert series. He broadened the Cathedral’s reach in the city through engagement with First Night and silent film.  He reestablished the then-defunct Cathedral Choir and Choristers programs, and reinvigorated the annual liturgical cycle including festive sacred concerts and the major musical feasts of Easter and Christmas.

Mr. Slater was active as a teacher, scholar, and performer for eighteen years in Boston.  He was Music Director of Church of Our Saviour, Longwood, where he rebuilt the music program, offering concerts and recitals, and installing a rebuilt Hook and Hastings organ. He was on the faculties of St. Paul’s Choir School, Cambridge, and The Sparhawk School, Amesbury, MA, and was an active freelancer in the Boston area.

Mr. Slater holds the Mus. M in conducting and B. A. in music with distinction in historical performance from Boston University.  He studied conducting with Julian Wachner, Ann Howard Jones, and David Hoose; piano with Virginia Eskin, David Deveau, and Benjamin Pasternak; and organ with Wachner, John Dunn, Frederick MacArthur, and David Enlow.
